West Coast Trail Adventure! 5 of 6
Day FIVE Sunday July 9th
I hate my boots
Up at 5:30. Very misty. I Went and grabbed my food from the anti bear food locker. It's an Easy hike today so cooked up some warm apple cinnamon oatmeal crumble and extra strength coffee to start. Just as I finish cooking the mist turns into rain! So it becomes Breakfast in the tent, and day prep in tent. It Only rained for an hour then turned into mist again. I Probably hit the trail at eightish this morning. I Quickly catch up with two ladies plodding along but I decided to join them for a chat and so we both can help each other with the cable car in about one km. It's a surprise Wide cable car river crossing this time, most crossings have been small creeks. It was a Heavier car that only took one person at a time. Both the ladies and me were glad we had help with this one. On Trail day two I had one scary cable car load and I didn't want to repeat another. After the cable car I left the ladies so I could travel at my normal pace
I took the beach walk whenever possible which was pleasant but very misty so it limited the ocean view. The Forrest Trail was in very good condition. A few ladder sections up and down from trail to Beach. I've Decided to name the first twenty km of the trail (day two), adventure alley, as I keep comparing and thinking about all those adventure and scary bits from there. Beach walking today was a little slog as my feet sank in the sand or pebbles and made walking slower. I Arrived at camp maybe noon, Darling River. It's a Pretty spot next to the river and ocean views. I decided that early into camp means nap today
I set up the tent, food in storage, and camp organized them took a nice warm sleep for a hour and a half.
By the time I awoke all the mist had burned off and it was brilliant sunshine for the rest of the day.
After my slumber it was water filtering time. I Went up river to find cleanest source and found a gorgeous little water fall about five minutes up creek. I didn't see a trail to the falls so I waded In calf deep and risked wet boots to get the best view possible of this beauty. Plus it was a hot day and chances are that everything will dry by evening.
It was a Lazy afternoon ocean watching and stretching. I pretended to be a Yogi. Dinner of pad Thai at 5:00, delicious.
Tidal pool walking this evening. The Tide was way out. Carpets of green and brown seaweed and algae. Bunches and bunches of muscles. Barnacles everywhere. Little pools with minnows, tiny crab, anomies, urchins, a big Red Sea star, a tiny hermit crab, and sea snails.
Another mouse awoke me 11:30 which was ok since I popped my head outside of the tent and found a wonderful full moon shining between a bonsai style beach tree.
This backpacking trip has actually had the best sleeping results compared to previous trips. I'm trying an new pillow out so maybe that's why?
